There's nothing as beautiful as having someone who believes in you. Someone who sees potential in you if when you aren't aware of the fact yourself. I am where I am (proudly) because the people around me have always seen the potential in me.
It started with being the best girl overall in the whole Ileho zone (Kakamega district) KCPE 2000 exams. With no school fees to join secondary school, I had no option than to sit in Primary school for another year. I did this with grace and emerged the best girl in my class, with a score of 407 out of the possible 500 marks. This landed me a place in the prestigious Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School, with a scholarship from the Canadian Harambee Education Society. I came got a mean score of B Plain in 2005 which was not high enough to earn me a regular place in the National Universities so I just stayed home, doing odd jobs here and there.
In the year 2007, I saw an advertisement by the National Industrial Training Council, for sponsoring bright needy girls to pursue Engineering courses. I gave it a shot and thanks be to God, I got a fully paid for chance to study Civil Engineering, Diploma level at the Eldoret Polytechnic. I graduated with a Credit score, which was the first ever to be scored by a girl in the institution's history and the best in the Civil Engineering department. With the competition out here, it became hard to get a job. Reasons were, I only had a diploma and no experience while there were thousands of people with degrees and masters.
Then came Asilia. I joined the company without having any knowledge in computers but thanks to my directors' (Andrew and Lulu) faith in me, I got training and I have now grown tremendously. I have come to realise that we can achieve a lot with passion... I love working at Asilia.
It's never too late to realise your dream and I'd like to help the young African girls out there know that they have the power to chose the life they want and also build their dreams. Let's all come together and share our stories, help the African girls rise.
