The December school holiday is here. Almost all parents had this similar question on their mind as soon as the holiday dates were released. Two months is not a short time to have young energetic teens with raging hormones at home. The economy has evolved greatly and for this fact very few parents are home to stay with the teens and help guide, if not monitor what they do during the day. Due to continued (understandably )absence of parents, performance-based education systems and uncontrolled media exposure, most youth are ignorant of the consequences of their behaviors. They lack parental guidance, instruction and proper mentorship as they grow up. This makes them seek answers from fellow inexperienced youth when faced with any social or emotional challenges.
There's a lot of negative social exposure that has been greatly boosted by the rapid advancement in technology and an increased use of the internet. I didn't know how to make a simple phone call from a very basic cell phone by the time I was 18. I didn't have a Facebook account until I was 23…. Look at how everything has evolved today. It is practically impossible to keep teenagers and youth away from the internet. For this matter, there is need to instill positive values and attitudes to help this future generation gain the best out of this technology. You will also appreciate the fact that these same teens have become too rebellious towards their parents to hear any advice from them (parents).

This is how you will find most kids (and teens) today. |
It's for this reason that
Geroson Social Initiative - Kenya has created youth (Boys and Girls) incubation programs, under their social initiative to address the social issue among the youth. Guided by youth mentors, teachers, parents and animators, the program aims at bridging the generational and informational gaps created by modern lifestyle where youth lack proper guidance on moral value systems.

The program runs during school holidays in a bid to bridge the gap of parental absence as well as keep the youth away from idleness that may expose them to behavioral and social risks. In partnership with Miale Education Centre – Eldoret, GSI will be holding a Girls Incubation Camp in Eldoret from 4 - 10 December 2016. More details to come up in next blog post.
